The stories could be named Story Mode and could unlock adventure mode. The stories could be divided in chapters instead of levels.
Adventure mode could be like Subspace Emissary. I know, it's my idea but it could introduce into some VGs that people don't know and maybe respect more the respective worlds and create a little more normal alliances.

Um.....I don't think you saw my previous post. Maybe in a story mode, there could be superbosses for each universe/series, like maybe Bowser X for Mario (from M&L BiS), and the lingering sentiment from KH, and maybe Shadoo from paper Mario.

If you're talking original modes, then maybe something like a time trial, where maybe you unlock a ghost when you beat a level in story mode fast enough, then you play the same level against the ghost. If you get the faster time, you'll unlock an optional character (one that isn't in the story line).
Another (weird) idea could be a "Mirror Melee" in a Stadium mode. It's similar to multi-man, but your foes are the same character as you. However, each of their statuses will be different, so you may fight against against Marios if you play as him, and the enemy Marios could be metal, invisible, giant, etc. As you kill more foes, they'll have compound statuses, so in the Marios' case, they could be giant and metal, fast and invisible, metal and invisible, etc. The objective could be to kill 50 foes or kill as much as you can until you die.

For the Time trial mode, you could unlock Story Mode exclusives like that.
Story mode exclusives could be not really exclusives but would be having crazy requirements that aren't concerning the game itself to unlock them, maybe?
